Customer Review: Money Well Spent - Camera and all the extras
I wanted to wait until I used the Camera before writing the review. The main reason I bought this camera is as a "step up" from my point-and-shoot Panasonic that always performed well for me and I will continue to use for some photos, but I wanted to be able to use different lenses and also have access to the RAW photo format. RAW images can be worked over with Photoshop (which I haven't bought yet) and are very large files holding much more data about the image than the point-and-shoot jpeg photo image files. You cannot edit jpeg images (that I know of). I attended a seminar given by Rick Sammon, a professional photographer, and was in awe of the things he can do with an image (correct all colors so the sky is not washed out to nothing, for example- Google his web page or YouTube for photography instruction). I am working my way toward richly colored images, and away from the kind of pictures we all take on vacation where the skies are not as wonderful as we remembered, the trees are not as green, you know.... I mainly photograph outdoor scenes, landscapes, wildflowers, nature scenes and also people-story images. I wanted a camera with different lenses for wide angle landscapes and also a telephone lens for animal and people close ups (without being close up). The package I bought from Cameta Camera through Amazon came with an 18-55mm lens and also a 75-300 lens. The lenses just screw on and off. Now then, the GOODIE BAG that came with this package from Cameta included a really nice camera "gadget" bag that holds the camera, lenses, extra cords, batteries, and there is room to spare. The bag I got is well made (I read some reviews about a cheap bag, mine is wonderful). ALSO I GOT an 8 gig card to use in the camera, I can take photos till the cows come home and not run out of room, even in the RAW giant sized photo image file. ALSO I received two camera batteries with a recharger, so I will never run out of power in the middle of the day. I ALSO received a card reader which makes it very easy to remove the card from the camera, plug it in the reader and then directly into my computer USB port, I never even had to install any software on my MAC, just plug in and download the images. This is the kind of little stuff that really adds up after you have decided to buy a camera and sort of deflates your concept of getting a good deal. I recommend buying the "outfit" as it is more painless way to commit to your purchase, plus you will need this stuff anyway and save some $$. The camera was ready to use out of the box - just insert card and battery and that's all. There is a dial with pre-set functions to take landscapes, macro, portrait shots, shutter priority or aperature priority, but if you want to you can also manually adjust whatever you want to, the ISO, etc. I am still learning about how to choose these options but am not shanghaied until I finish my education. I opened the box in the evening, put the battery in the camera, screwed on the telephoto lens and took a photo of a painting in the next room, pretty much in the dark, and was amazed that the focus was so clear, and the flash just right. Amazed. This is not something you can do with a point-and-shoot. One thing I have noticed is that the focus you see in the view finder is ACCURATE. There are red lights showing the EXACT area the lens is focused on, and if you move the camera and therefore the focus, you might not get the shot you want. For instance, I was out in a duck blind with the telephoto lens on, the camera was set to take photos continuously, and I was capturing images of ducks coming in to land on the lake water. Since the ducks were moving, and I was following them with the camera the red dots in the viewfinder were not always squarely on the flying ducks, so I was not always focusing directly on the duck. If you are not taking images of moving things, no problem. Just a head's up, you need to be accurate with your pointing of the lens, the camera will do it's job as you instruct it. I took 535 images over a couple of hours and the card and battery were no where near capacity. Later I was taking photos of some little kids driving wildly around in the yard in a mule, they were larger and easier to get the focus dots pegged on, and they came out perfectly in focus. All in all, this camera, lenses, and goodies package was money well spent for me. I would recommend shopping with Cameta? Camata? Camera through Amazon (they must have set up a "package deal" between themselves). Shipping was fast, everything received was as expected. If you want to go beyond the point-and-shoot type photo but are boggled with all the brands and choices like I was, and don't want to spend too much money on the wrong thing like I didn't want to, look for a package deal such as this one. Also, check out Rick Sammon, he is giving away a lot of info on his website on how to use this sort of entry level SLR camera to get the most out of the equipment. I have not been able to use it very much yet, but I think it will be the camera I have wanted for a long time. I was disappointed that it took a week to ship it. A buckle broke the first time I opened the case, and then another broke within a few days. The case was then replaced.

Somehow I managed to loose my old charger and my lens cap for my Canon Rebel xti camera. This thing works as advertised, no problems, battery stays charged for just as long as it did before. If you lost your charger and its compatible with your camera battery, this is your charger.

I thought the Tripod was going to be a lot bigger. It's only a few inches tall (at max 5). It's pretty stable and flexible but I wanted it to be a lot bigger. Good deal for the money though or if you just want to be able to stabilize it for video blogs, etc.

Customer Review: PCB Assembly needed to be replaced after 3 months
We're Not happy with this camera. My first Canon camera was a S400. After 8 years of use, it needed a repair which was a known defect so Canon covered all shipping and repair costs. We purchased the SD880IS in February 2009 and the "PCB Assembly was inoperative" 3 months later. We hardly even used it! We used the camera heavily for 3.5 days out of those 3 months before it broke. Very disappointing. Don't Buy! Don't Buy!

I have read the negative reviews of the SD 880 IS and can only conclude that there must have been a small batch of cameras that were defective since the majority of evaluations were positive. I have owned a number of Canons and they have been excellent. I have had the 880 since last November when I passed my SD 870 IS down to my son. I wanted the new features and they have proved very beneficial. The picture quality, especially sharpness and color saturation, are exceptional especially when enlarging to letter sized prints. I recommended this camera to a friend of mine and unfortunately he had the "black screen" experience mentioned in one of the negative reviews. Before the problem, however, he took over 800 really beautiful pictures in Egypt, Jordan and the Holy Land. I hope Canon rectifies the defects in manufacturing as I am a big supporter of these wonderful little cameras.

I wanted a fish eye wide angle lens but didn't want the high price. This lense fit the bill. Pictures very sharp and I get the fish eye effect I was looking for. It is attached to an 18-55mm lense. At the 18mm it does create a round view that shows the lens barrel but it is an interesting effect. Great lens for the price.

Customer Review: a life saver when you need to download a ton of vid/pics
If you have a big SD card and typically download a ton of pictures and video (I'd say over 250 video/pics) then this little item is pretty useful. The lowdown: you simply remove your battery in the camera (I have an SD950IS) and slip the adapter battery in its place, and close the battery cover. pull out the rubber stopper on the camera's battery cover (yeah, this is what that thing is for!) and plug in the adapter cord. It's pretty much that easy. So besides using this for downloading a lot of content, I have also plugged it in when replaying images and videos from the camera to a TV. I have noticed that when I have a large download from the camera, that using this adapter as the power source instead of the battery power (which is what I always did) made the download noticeably faster! Just keep in mind that the adapter is exactly what it looks like in the picture, it can be a little cumbersome if you are trying to travel light. It has that typical converter block that you see and the wires are long, so they could take up some space, again, if you are looking to take it with you everywhere you go. I just keep it by the computer where I download everything. Great little product.

Customer Review: A perfect bag for carrying 1 DSLR camera + 2-3 total lenses and flash
This is a perfect bag for carrying: - 1 DSLR camera with 70-200mm f/2.8 (i.e. big) zoom lens attached (mine is Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8 which is comparable in size and weight with Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8) - 1-2 additional lenses and/or flash (I put 17-80mm and 50mm f/1.8 lenses and the SB-400 flash - a couple memory cards and extra battery It's pretty sturdy and tight (with the stabilizing strap), but that's good because the camera and lens won't move much inside the bag. Here are the pros and cons: Pros: 1. Can fit SLR attached with the big 70-200mm f/2.8 lens (or equivalent) 2. Enough room for extra lenses and flash 3. Topload feature for easy access 4. Sturdy and good padding to protect the expensive equipment inside 5. Slim profile and more discreet design (vs some other pro camera bag) 6. Stabilizing strap to minimize movement 7. Lots of compartment for memory cards, batteries, lens cap, etc 8. Less than 3 lbs, and compact size 9. All weather cover is nice to have (and essential for professional) 10. Expandable (i.e. you can manage the divider/padding to create different size of space) Cons: 1. Only take 1 full size SLR (I tried 2 D40s + 18-55mm and it works) 2. A bit pricey (for my amateur standard) 3. Close to 3 lbs (depend on how you see it) 4. Not a backpack model (if you prefer carrying backpack type bag when photographing) 5. Can't put your regular 15 inch laptop in this bag (however you can squeeze in the 8.9 inch netbook). If you want to add your regular notebook, you will need to get the Lowepro Classified 250 AW series 6. Might be a bit too much bag/space for a quick short trip where you don't need to bring your 70-200mm f/2.8 lens (use the Lowepro Topload Zoom series bag instead) 7. Not as easy (as I thought it would be) to pull out the camera in and out of the bag but it's reasonable (maybe it's because of the design and position of the zipper and the fact the bag is still stiff since it is new. I'm expecting it will get better as the bag will get softer/break-in with use) In conclusion, this is a very good (and very stylish) bag if you want to carry a camera attached with the 70-200mm f/2.8 lens (or smaller lens), with 1-2 extra lens (smaller lenses than the 70-200mm f/2.8) and/or flash.

For only $14 and change why not utilize the Remote Shutter Release? This is easy to use, just set your shutter release to either REMOTE or REMOTE+2s and push the button. You don't even have to point the remote directly at the camera, at least not on my D60. It comes with a small nylon pouch with loops for your camera's neckstrap, and it comes with a battery. Again, this is a no-brainer must-have, for the price.
Customer Review: Works on D70 too
Ordered this remote for use with my D70 and it does exactly what it should. It's smaller than I thought, which is excellent. I can keep it in my camera bag all the time without sacrificing much space. The only downside is that there is no half-press control (common to all Nikon IR remotes), so there can be a delay if camera is in auto-focus mode. However, since the D70 has no remote port or factory battery grip, this is the best I can do.

I got this package on time, and in good shape. The price was alittle to good too be true. And it was. The Flash is what I payed for, cheaply made, but, it works good. The problem showed up when I installed the Hot Cable to My XTi inorder to extend My Flash. The Cable mounting clip got stuck in the Hot Connect on the Camera. The Maker of this part made this plastic slid too thick for the guide on the cameras hot connect. I was able to get it out of the mount,but, I had to have a Camera Guy do it. He said it was just cheaply made. Now I need to find a better made Hot Cable. Patrick

This Nikon 50mm f/1.4G AF-S lens produces sharp pictures and great color and contrast. It is also perfect for portrait and other general purposes (semi-macro etc). This lens also produces nice bokeh. The picture quality and bokeh quality are comparable with the other (older) Nikon 50mm lens which are famous for being sharp. Overall, this is a very versatile lens. Many of us (including those who already own 50mm f/1.8D AF or 50mm f/1.4D AF as well) have been waiting for this lens for a long time, and overall it is worth the wait, and it is worth the upgrade to this 50mm f/1.4G AF-S. If you don't own any of the earlier version of the 50mm lens then you should definitely get this lens over the older 50mm non-AFS lens (especially if price is not much of a factor for you or if your camera body is a D40, D40x, or D60 which the autofocus with will work with those cameras as well). Some of the limitations of this lens are similar to the other 50mm lenses (but some big benefits are added in this lens): First, being a prime lens, you will need to move your feet a lot to compose your picture. If you are used to zoom lens, don't underestimate this limitation. It takes me a while to get used to it, and sometime I still find people looking at me wondering why I am moving forward and backwards. the good news is that most of the time, they don't think I'm weird, but they are actually wondering if I'm a professional photographer. Secondly, the focal range of 50mm, which is considered the normal lens and great for portrait lens. but on many DSLRs which is not full frame (unless you have a full frame Nikon DSLR like the D700 or D3, then 50mm is 50mm), this lens become a 75mm equivalent which is in the border of a short tele lens. I actually like the 75mm equivalent though I often have to move backwards when taking picture of a group of people. While this lens produces very sharp images at f/1.4, the corner show lower contrast. Sharpness and contrast increases further as you stop down to f/2, f/2.8 and f/4. The big plus with this lens over the older 50mm lens is the AF-S feature which is auto focus system that is internal to the lens, very fast and very silent. This lens will please a lot of people who currently own D40, D40x, and D60, as they now can benefit from the autofocus. Another big win is the manual override on autofocus mode (M/A mode), which will allow us to change the focus without having to change the mode to manual mode (this is pretty standard to most Nikon newer lenses but it's a first for the Nikon 50mm lens series) I'm a bit surprised that Nikon didn't include VR in this lens since they add VR to many of their newer lenses including some of wider angle lens (e.g the 16-85mm, and the 18-55mm) which would be perfect when taking handhelds shots during low light environment (like concert, indoor sports, etc). And the price (current price) will be perfect too if this lens have a VR feature (otherwise it is a bit expensive). If you are wondering whether you should get a fast lens or a lens with VR (Vibration Reduction), here's my take: In overall, VR does help a lot (as it will reduce camera shake) and will produce better/sharper picture than equivalent lens without VR (especially if the object is static). If the object is moving fast (sports/action) then VR feature alone might not help (depending on how fast the object is moving and how much light is available), and a fast lens often end up being a far better solution, even without VR feature as it will allow much faster shutter speed to freeze motion. Using tripod (and a remote) will substitute for the need of VR feature. In general I would recommend getting a fast lens with VR feature (and usually it is expensive) such as the 70-200 f/2.8 VR, but if one can only get for one or the other, then find out what do you want to use the lens for and then use the guideline mentioned here. If you are wondering whether you will get the benefit of buying f/1.4 lens over a f/1.8 lens, just remember that the f/1.4 lens is about 60% faster than f/1.8 at its widest aperture setting. With this information, you can decide if the additional speed will justify the additional cost. The bokeh is nicer as well in f/1.4 lens but I think speed is usually the main factor in deciding whether to get the more expensive f/1.4 lens. Here are the summary of pros and cons for this Nikon 50mm f/1.4G AF-S lens: Pros: 1. AF-S AF-S AF-S (very fast focus, internal focus, and very silent) 2. M/A mode (manual focus override available on autofocus mode) 3. Very fast lens (f/1.4) 4. Very sharp pictures 5. Great for sport/action photography 6. Great for indoor and low light situation 7. Great for portrait 8. Bokeh is almost as good as many expensive Nikon tele-lens 9. Perfect for wedding photography (or low light with no-flash event). However, also check out the following lens for wedding photography (17-35mm f/2.8, 24-70 f/2.8, 17-55mm f/2.8, 28-70mm f/2.8 or the other two 50mm nikon prime lenses) 9. 75mm equivalent which can be considered a short tele lens (If you need more zoom, you can get the Nikon 85mm f/1.8, 85mm f/1.4 or the 70-200mm f/2.8 VR). If you have full frame DSLR(like the D3 or D700), then this #9 pros is not applicable. 10. Did I mention very fast and very silent focus? Cons: 1. Being prime lens, you need to move your feet a lot to adjust/compose 2. Being a G lens (no aperture ring available), this lens will not work on manual focus camera where you need to set the aperture from the lens) 3. Price is a bit on the high range for a prime lens 4. No VR. As VR will be useful for taking handheld shots on low light (especially if the object is somewhat static or if the photographer doesn't have steady hands when taking photograph) 5. 75mm equivalent with 1.5x multiplier on non full frame DSLR (many people find this is an odd range for normal lens). If you have full frame DSLR(like the D3 or D700), then this #5 cons is not applicable. Bottom line: This lens is so versatile that I think everyone should own this lens (or at least one of the other 50mm lenses) in addition to all the lenses that they already have. Being a very fast lens, it will allow people to take action shot in low light that otherwise wouldn't be able to be do. And now, with AF-S, there is nothing to dislike about this lens (though in my opinion, this lens might attract even more interest if it has a VR feature). Happy Photographing! Sidarta Tanu

This is a ridiculous price for what it is. Even worse, I realized only after I got it that it's the frame to be used around dioptric lenses. It's not what you would get to replace the rubber piece around the stock eye cup. So, like an earlier reviewer, I had to pull off the gasket and put it onto my eyecup. Luckily it fits so it wasn't a complete waste and the end result was what I wanted.

Customer Review: great tele lens for such money
i just purchased this lens from 47th avenue seller. they shipped it fast and today i tried it. i have canon 300D. obviously you will need a tripod. there is no way you can shoot a still picture holding 5 pounds in your hands and w/manual focus. it works pretty well at 650mm. to reduce shakeness you might want to use a shutter remote(6$ on ebay). at 1300mm it is hard to focus because having 23" lens and camera weight on the other end makes it hard. 2x converter makes it even harder b/c of shakement. you really need perfect conditions to use 2x with the lens. i use some manual parameters as exposure or shutter speed. i was shooting towards the evening and got pretty decent shots. i mean you need to understand that even 650mm is a huge zoom. 1300mm is insane and it makes it hard. this lens is made for a very specific purpose. you will not be able to shoot sports or fast animals b/c it is to heavy and too slow. but it is great for the lanscapes. i did some great pics using 200 ISO. a lot of people write bad reviews before they even try this lens. all we knoe that canon or sigma lens 700mm would run around 7000$ or more and obviously you cannot compare opteka with those 30 times more expensive lenses. but some people do and come up with the most rediculous conclusions. this lens needs time to get good pics. at 650-800mm it is perfect. you might even do some animal shots. at 1300 forget about it. as i mentioned earlier it is big. focusing is easy, if you ever used a telescope it is the same idea. it is hard to focus at 1300mm or more. it might look ok but when you zoom in to the pic it looks a little blury. for 250$ it is a great toy. anyone who wants to buy it needs to understand that this lens for a very specific pics. the object needs to be at least 30 yards away. in conclusion, i guess it is worth the money. i cannot talk much about the quality b/c i just had it for a very little time. it look alright. and please ignore those stupid reviews on different web sites of people who comment about this lens without trying it!

This case is hard to open and get the camera into, the hook is cheap, and it is just pretty useless overall. Don't buy it. Get a third-party case that holds more (like the optional USB cable and stand).

I was looking for a wide angle lens to photograph rooms of a house for a web site and order this item along with a fish eye lens. The "Professional" 45 X wide angle lens was a disappointment. It is very small and attaches onto the end of your camera's lens. It does this with a adhesive ring that sticks to your existing camera lens. The adhesive ring has a magnetic side that then holds on the lens. Not a real secure set up that will become less so over time. I would wonder what might happen to the adhesive it the camera was left in a hot car for a while. But if you are looking for a wide angle for occasional use - pop it on, take a photo or two and pop it off, I guess it is OK. The wide angle view through the lens is good and clear. Since it is attached to the end of the lens you never get an edge or a tunnel view. It provides about 1/3 wider angle then the lens on the camera. Which is considerably wider. There is no distortion. I found the fish-eye better suited for my purposes. It mounts securely with an adapter, that mechanically connects it to the camera. Using the zoom on the camera you can go much wider then the 45x. However you get only a little wider before you pick up an edge. At the extreme with the fish eye you get tunnel view and distortion. But, you are in control of this with your zoom. I found for interior room photos the fish eye was more effective.

I was given this battery as a birthday gift a couple of months ago. Unfortainatly I did not try to use it until today, because I never needed it before. When I pulled it out to try charging it, I found that the battery will not charge for more than a couple seconds on the canon charger that came with my XS. Nothing lists the need for a seperate charger, and if a different charger was needed, that would only up the cost of the battery!

I ordered this battery with reservations because other users said it was difficult taking the battery out of the camera. It fits just as well as the battery that came with the battery. I usually charge my batteries before a shoot so I can only say that after 300 pictures the battery indicator displays full power. With the savings over Canon's battery this is a very good choice. I was a little nervous about the bag initially. I slung it over my left arm and it just didn't feel very secure. I'm sure there was some type of instruction manual included that explained that you put it over your head and then the strap goes from your right shoulder across your chest, but what red-blooded American ever read instruction booklets. Love the bag - it just fits my 70-200mm F/2.8 lens with the 1.4 extender attached. It is fantastic to be able to slide the bag around and change lenses or access equipment without needing to set things on the ground. The tripod is about what you'd expect and so is the lens cleaning kit. The bag is fantastic.

The backpack and tripod work great. I spent the first half hour just exploring the backpack to find all of the pockets. The tripod weighs hardly anything, and the handle makes it very portable. This backpack doesn't have a strap for hooking the tripod on, but that should be pretty easy to do with bungee cords. The cleaning kit is a little ghetto, but given the price, I'm not complaining.

The 430EX II flash is a great adjunct for my Canon Rebel XSi SLR camera. In fact, you can't do flash photography without a separate flash; the flash that is attached to the camera is just too harsh! There is a learning curve to using a separate flash, like knowing where to angle the pivoting head, but it is fun experimenting. The Gary Lightsphere II is a neat little gadget that enhances flash photography even more! If you want to get stunning studio style portraits, the Lightsphere is a cheap alternative to purchasing all the umbrella flashes, etc. It is a great value, not to mention extremely portable!

The Canon 430ex Speedlite is great in that it is a match for my Canon Power Shot S5 IS and automatically adjusts for focal length. The Sto-Fen Omni-Bounce Diffuser makes a big difference in the color tone faces. The faces are no longer washed out. The TTL Flash Cord has given me a couple of problems. Sometimes the flash and camera don't sync as indicated by a symbol on back of the flash readout. I have had to play with the connection to get it to work. The flash bracket is nothing special but when folding it out the angle or the flash head changes so it's best to take a couple of test shots. Overall it was a great combo deal with the extra batteries and charger.

After many comparing and contrasting with the other lenses, I found that this actually works really good for me. I'm not a professional but I do like taking good photos. Recently i've been taking action shots in football games and basketball games. My recently purchased G10 wasn't really helping me out since it wasn't up to its full capacity. So i decided to get some lens for it. I must say, the Opteka .45x HD2 Wide Angle Lens really helped me out! A lot! The ghosting went away and also the lens flare. My pictures came out much better than last time. As for the delivery, it delivered right on schedule! Now I just need to buy a flash system for my camera, and maybe it'll deliver me even better pictures than without. The lenses are also very cheap. Don't hesitate. It's worth your money. I guarantee it.

The rebel camera does not sit securely in this case even though it is one of the cameras listed. I am going to try to figure a way to pad it to make it sit more secure. The side zipper is water proof and this makes it difficult to unzip although I like the concept of the easy access.

Why, you ask? Its simple... every one thinks about their own selves, avers Dale Carnegie of "How to Win Friends and Influence People" fame. Doing smart business is often a question of striking deals that are attractive to others while serving one's own interests. This is where good negotiating skills come in handy.

Negotiating skills are needed during all business interactions, be it acquiring a new client, striking deals with suppliers, hiring new employees or even keeping the ones you have. Bear a couple of things in mind to negotiate well:

The personal touch: Whatever be the deal you are trying to negotiate, keeping in contact with the other party is essential. By this we do not mean fixing appointments over the answering machine! Ideally, one should make an effort to meet the client or vendor in person. This will not only secure the other parties' attention but also give you a chance to assess them closely.

Understand the terrain: The strategy you employ during negotiations will depend upon the other party as well. For instance, if you have common interests, collaboration is the most likely outcome. Compromise is yet another outcome, wherein both parties settle for something a little short of their individual targets. But if your groundwork is strong, you could be calling the shots. Be a patient listener and try to get as much as possible out of the other person; this will put you in the driver's seat. Prepare and play your cards well, else you could find yourself accommodating more and more concessions.

Aim high: While the idea is to make the deal as beneficial as possible, that's probably what the other person is going for as well. So, define your targets and keep them high enough to ensure that you do not lose out in the bargain. Ensure a fairly large margin to play with. While setting goals, stick to what is best for your company, (reputation included) rather than that which merely enhances profits. Remember to be discreet about your own goals while negotiating; keep the opponent guessing about what's on your mind!

Keep the ball rolling: Good negotiating skills require adopting an active stance. For every problem the other party comes up with, discuss possible solutions. Be enthusiastic and persuasive; emphasize common ground and stress on the benefits of the deal to the other person. Unexpected opportunities might emerge during the dialog; hence be prepared to request for more time, if you need to consult with others. Likewise, if dispensable clauses seem to be getting in the way, compromising on them is probably the best thing to do.

See which way the wind blows: Don't hesitate to make or seek clarifications as this will avoid confusion later. Think twice before you agree to anything new on the spot; there might be more to it than what is obvious. Keep your ears and eyes open for any changes that might not be in the best interest of your business. Calling off a deal that is a no deal is just as important as negotiating well.

Face roadblocks head on: While conflicts are common to all negotiations, they need to be handled with caution. Suggest temporary solutions to problems until they can be discussed at length later. This way you could buy more time to tackle those difficulties efficiently. If there are more than two people on either side then call for a vote to resolve the setback.

The devil is in the details: Once you see the deal through, take care to outline the terms and conditions carefully. Specify the validity of the contract and clauses addressing compensation if the deal falls out among other things. Do this meticulously to avoid loopholes. Attention to minute details will help save precious time and money, should the tide turn against you. Look before you leap; don't make any commitments before the deal is down in black and white.

There might come a time when it seems like the discussion is headed nowhere; stay patient and focused through it. "Getting to Yes: Negotiating Agreement without Giving In" by Roger Fisher, William L. Ury and Bruce Patton , could be a good start for those of you wanting to nail the deal at top speed . "Interviewing, Counseling, and Negotiating: Skills for Effective Representation" by Robert M. Bastress and Joseph D. Harbaugh, could improve your negotiating skills a great deal. If poor communication has been getting in the way of your negotiating skills, solve your problem .

It's happened to many of us at one time or another, and not just women, but some men too. We're sitting in the doctor's office, being told (once again) that this yeast infection we're suffering through is just something that we're going to have to deal with off and on for the rest of our lives. It's obvious that modern medicine either can't, or won't find a way to cure this problem for good.

One day, I asked myself an innocent question: "What home remedies for yeast infections did people use before modern medicine existed?"

It makes sense when you think about it. In order to deal with a problem employee it is important to be able to pinpoint where the true problem lies. The good news is that managers only need to focus on three areas to find the answer.

As a manager, if you follow these three areas in order, you will find where you will need to focus your efforts to turn your problem employee into a productive member of your team.

The first area to look at is training and development. Has the employee been trained and developed properly? Does he or she know what is expected of them? Was their training and development period adequate? Do they perform their duties within the guidelines set forth by the business/department?

If you can answer yes to all of these questions then training and development is not the issue, then you need to move to the next area. On the other hand if you answer no to any of the above, it is time to set aside some time to re-train the individual.

The second area is the environment. Is there something in the employees work environment that may be affecting their performance? There may be a possibility that the employee may have developed an allergy to the equipment they work with, or there may be something in the air that is causing the employee problems getting the job done. Or they don't have the space, correct chair, tools to perform their role.

If the environment is the cause of the problem it may be in the managers best interest to try to find an alternate job within the company that will provide a better climate for the employee to work in. Or provide them with the appropriate tools in order to complete their role.

If the environment is not the problem then the only other option is the staff's behaviour. This is by far the most difficult to deal with as people in general get very defensive and offended when they are being talked to about their conduct.

When speaking with an employee about their behaviour it is important to be up front with the issue. There is no reason to beat around the bush. You have to ask questions and let the employee say everything they have to say. The employee may have personal problems that are affecting their duties; they may hate the job or are having problems with someone they work with.

Once you have found the root of the problem then it is important to offer solutions. It may be counselling, a mediated meeting with another employee, or maybe the offer of a leave of absence from work to get their affairs in order.

Once the discussion has neared the end you must inform the employee of your expectations as their direct report and how they are expected to behave at work.

By following the above steps you as a manager will be able to improve performance and production from the most difficult member of staff. A Last Word...
